Modular Assets - Development log 13/01/2020

What is a modular asset?

A modular asset is an asset that is made up of smaller assets. An example of an modular assets are buildings, characters with different clothes, pipes, wires etc... They are usually somthing that can be tiled like the walls of buildings, and pipes, adding all of these together will create an environment.

The best way to make modular walls is to use a cube and etrude it to how you want and then remove the faces on the edge of the wall because they wont be needed as the player wont see it and it will improve performance when working with larger assets.

When making modular assets, you should start with the main object such as a plain wall and then copy it and add things like windows and doors. Its best to use hard surface modelling when building modular assets because it's easier to work with.

Modular assets are used to craft an environment using lots of smaller assets such as using modular building to build a city. Each part of the building like the walls can have different varients and you just swap them instead of remodelling the entire asset. Using modular assets saves time and is very useful when modelling large objects as you can split them up. Here are a few examples of modular assets used in games:
Each of these modular assets make up the environment and were modelled individually. All these assets are used in multiple maps across Call of Duty Modern Warfare.
